Review: Potions and Prejudice by Tee Harlowe

Author: Tee Harlowe
Genre: Romantasy
Format: Kindle, eARC
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Series: Yes, Moonflower Witches Book 1
Pages: 256

Synopsis {via Goodreads}

Witch hates warlock.

Warlock hates witch.

Warlock falls for witch.

. . . Things get very, very complicated.

Elspeth Moonflower just wants to cast a spell. Unfortunately, that’s impossible due to a curse her grandmother cast that forces every witch in her family to marry before using magic. As a result, Elspeth and her sisters are outcasts, helping their mother run her traveling apothecary shop—while she complains that her daughters are all magicless spinsters.

When their cart breaks down and strands them in the charming village of Thistlegrove, Elspeth’s older sister meets a handsome warlock who’s smitten. If only the warlock’s best friend wasn’t completely insufferable. Draven Darkstone is broody, arrogant, wealthy—a perfect example of why Elspeth never wants to marry. But for the sake of her sister, she needs to be nice.

Which is hard when all Draven does is glower at her. It’s even harder when the glowering turns to longing glances. It’s downright impossible when he kisses her.

Little does Elspeth know, the line between love and hate just got thinner.

The low-stakes fantasy of Legends and Lattes meets the romance of Bridgerton in Potions & Prejudice, a spicy cozy fantasy romance with a grumpy sentient cottage, an anxious miniature dragon, and all the cottagecore vibes.

I absolutely loved this book. It's a cute romantasy with low stakes Pride and Prejudice vibes. If you're looking for something sweet and cozy, this book is absolutely it. Potions & Prejudice is the first standalone novel in a series of standalones.

One of the best things about this novel, other than the fact that it's a Pride and Prejudice retelling, is that the character's relationships are absolutely the center of this novel. While there's a larger plot happening, the way the characters interact with one another is the most important thing in this novel. Elspeth Moonflower is one of four daughters in a family of witches with no magic. She's tough and is the center of her family, she takes care of everyone. Draven Darkstone is just trying to take care of his little sister, Georgie.

The romance in this novel is definitely enemies to lovers and is perfectly paced. The characters get their HEA, but only after a lot of arguing early on and some skepticism about trusting one another. Unlike Pride and Prejudice, this book is a little bit spicy. There's definitely some hot open door scenes in this novel.

Overall highly recommended for everyone, but particularly for lovers of cozy romances and romantasy.

Review: Off to the Races by Elsie Silver

Off to the Races

Author: Elsie Silver
Genre: Cowboy Romance
Format: Paperback
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Series: Yes, Gold Rush Ranch Book 1
Pages: 480

Synopsis {via Goodreads}
A small-town enemies to lovers romance and the debut novel from the bestselling author of Flawless and Wild Love.

Keeping things professional with my employees has never been an issue… until Billie waltzes onto my property.

She’s talented, feisty and so damn tempting. We clash from the moment we meet, and I can't stop thinking about all the ways I could take her down a peg. I can't stop thinking about her, period.

And in a small town, on an even smaller farm, it’s hard to keep my distance. Billie is the whole package: whip-smart with a body I fantasize about, and quite possibly the only woman who can save this business – and me. She drives me crazy, but the more time we spend together, the more I crave her: her lips, her trust, her heart… I want it all.

But at what cost? Because suddenly I don’t just want to win races, I want to win the girl.

Review

πŸ‡ Sports Romance (Derby)
πŸ•” Workplace Romance
🐎 Western Romance
☀️ Grumpy x Sunshine
πŸ”₯ Slow burn
πŸ’” 3rd Act Breakup

Off to the Races is my first book by Elsie Silver and also Elsie Silver's first book. Silver's debut novel is a western, small town, workplace romance. While Billie and Vaughn have great chemistry, Billie's best chemistry is with DD (Double Diablo) the racehorse she's hired to train. I have to say I had a little bit of trouble connecting with this book at the beginning. It picked up and I was able to get into it, but it took me a long time to actually connect. If you're a horse person, might be that wouldn't happen to you, but I struggled a little bit.

I think my problem was that I have certain expectations for my western romance and this one challenged those expectations. The ranch in this book raises race horses and the book's sport is derby, for example. But once I was able to connect with the characters, I was able to get into the book.

The plot is well paced and revolves around Billie training Double Diablo and building a relationship with this horse while trying to avoid Vaughn. There are a lot of references to derby and I found myself actually interested in that aspect of the book, particularly when a race is actually happening. Billie's attempts to avoid Vaughn obviously fail and the two them go from dislike to lovers after a slow burn. The heat in this book is probably a 2 out of 5, so there's spicy scenes, but they're pretty mild as spice goes.

I do have to admit, the book made me cry. There're some scenes with Billie and DD, late in the book, that made me break out in sobs. I got it together, but I definitely cried. Since I don't often cry over books, Silver got me with this one.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who really enjoys western romances, loves horses, and enjoys a slow burn romance with a 3rd act break up (no one likes a 3rd act break up, do they?).

Review: Stay with Me by Brooke Montgomery

 Stay with Me

Author: Brooke Montgomery
Genre: Cowboy Romance
Format: Audible, Kindle
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Series: Yes, Sugarland Creek Book 1
Pages: 436

Synopsis {via Goodreads}
A best friend’s brother stand-alone from small-town romance author Brooke Montgomery about a girl who falls pregnant by the wrong man and the cowboy who takes her in…

I've crushed on my best friend's brother for years.

He's a six-foot-three, dark-haired cowboy who works on his family's ranch and sends butterflies to my stomach anytime he looks at me. But he's never made a move, so I need to get over it.

Except, when he reads a text message about me liking a mysterious guy, he snaps and demands answers. Little does he know, it's my code name for him.

When he finally confesses he likes me too, I find out I'm pregnant. With my ex-boyfriend's baby.

After spending three weeks together in secret, my world turns upside down when that little white stick reveals a positive sign from the one-night stand I had before him.

Now everything's a mess and my life's spiraling out of control.

I can't expect him to date me anymore, so I insist we return to being friends. The last thing he needs is a girl who's carrying another man's baby and about to be a first-time mom.

But when my apartment gets broken into, and there's a suspected criminal on the loose, he insists I move in with him to keep me safe.

Staying platonic proves to be harder with each passing day as he goes with me to my appointments, takes me baby shopping, and stocks the kitchen with all my weird cravings. He's so involved that everyone assumes he's the father. And I don’t correct them.

But the truth always comes out in a Southern small town.

πŸ‘ΆπŸ» Accidental Pregnancy
❤️ Best Friend's Brother
🏑 Forced Proximity
πŸ‘¨‍πŸ‘©‍πŸ‘§‍πŸ‘§ Found Family

Whew, I wasn't sure about this one when the book started. Brooke Montgomery's Stay with Me is a romantic suspense about Magnolia and Tripp, the mess they make of their life, and how it comes back together to give them their HEA. If you've read the first book in this series, then you know when this book starts that the book involves an accidental pregnancy, you even have a small inkling about how it happens. This book is about that accidental pregnancy and how it pans out. Since pregnancy tropes are my least favorite tropes, I wasn't sure how this book was going to play for me. Turns out, thanks to Tripp, it played pretty nicely.

The characters, Tripp and Magnolia are in love and have been for a long time. Neither of them knows that, however, so it takes them a hell of a long time to get together but the book picks up shortly before they finally figure it out. I have to say, Tripp completely makes this book. Yes, Magnolia is the object of his affection, but the way he treats her is everything and I absolutely mean everything. EVERYTHING. Trip is 100% the cowboy every girl wants. The way he handles his girlfriend's accidental pregnancy with another man is completely swoon-worthy. I absolutely fell in love with him from the start.

The book has a suspense element with Magnolia's ex-boyfriend, but I won't give that away. Let's just say it doesn't end well for Travis (Magnolia's ex). Otherwise, the whole plot revolves around the pregnancy and how Tripp and Magnolia handle it. Something about this book I particularly liked was the well-handled anxiety rep. As a person with severe anxiety, I completely feel for Tripp. Also, this book's plot is perfectly paced.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys western romances and anyone who enjoys a particularly strong MMC. Have I mentioned that Tripp is absolutely everything?

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Brigands & Breadknives

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Wishful Endings and spotlights books we're
excited for but haven't read yet.

This week's book comes from my NetGalley wishlist. I've requested it, so cross all your digits that they approve me because I cannot wait for this one. I loved the first one so much, this one is bound to be just as cozy and fun!

Synopsis
Return to the cozy fantasy world of the #1 New York Times bestselling Legends & Lattes series with a new adventure featuring fan-favorite, foul-mouthed bookseller, Fern.

Fern has weathered the stillness and storms of a bookseller’s life for decades, but now, in the face of crippling ennui, transplants herself to the city of Thune to hang out her shingle beside a long-absent friend’s coffee shop. What could be a better pairing? Surely a charming renovation montage will cure what ails her!

If only things were so simple…

It turns out that fixing your life isn’t a one-time prospect, nor as easy as a change of scenery and a lick of paint.

A drunken and desperate night sees the rattkin waking far from home in the company of a legendary warrior surviving on inertia, an imprisoned chaos-goblin with a fondness for silverware, and an absolutely thumping hangover.

As together they fend off a rogue’s gallery of ne’er-do-wells trying to claim the bounty the goblin represents, Fern may finally reconnect with the person she actually is when there isn’t a job to get in the way.

Have you read anything by Travis Baldree? I looooooovvveeeedddd Legends and Lattes! I imagine this one will be just as good. If you're interested in cozy fantasy novels check out my review for the first book:

Top Ten Tuesday: How My Blog Has Changed

It's Top Ten Tuesday! Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's theme is... Ways in Which My Blogging/Review Style Has Changed Over Time. I think, though, that I'm going to go with more of a general how my blog has (and hasn't) changed over the years.

This one is my first Top Ten Tuesday in a long time and it feels like this one's kind of tough! There's a lot I could say here, but we'll see if I can come up with ten things. Okay, let's go!
  1. 13 year hiatus: Just what it sounds like, my blog took a very long hiatus and I decided earlier this year that I would come back to it and start blogging again. But, things have changed in that time. Lots of the blogs I used to follow don't exist anymore. May of the old blog memes I enjoyed, they don't exist anymore and while I've considered starting one of them back up, I don't really get enough blog traffic to actually pull it off.
  2. More organized: One thing that's different now than before is that I'm a little bit more organized. I'm still a little bit of a mood blogger, but I try to keep it a bit organized now.
  3. Less rambling: My reviews used to be a big longer and more rambly than they are now. I've streamlined it down and got a format I like.
  4. Same format: Something that hasn't changed is that my general blog review format is still the same. Maybe a little more streamlined, but still generally the same.
  5. The old memes: There were so many old memes I really enjoyed, but I'm enjoying taking part in the new blog memes too! This one included.
  6. Still focused on romance: Since this blog was created in 2011, most of my reading has been romance. There's the occasional fantasy or other type of book, but almost everything I read is romance and this blog reflects that.
  7. Cleaner blog theme: I had a really cute blogger theme with buttons and everything that I put together myself and while I enjoyed it, it was really busy! I'm definitely more of a minimalist as I get older, at least on my blog (real life... well, not so much). I love the clean style I'm rocking with now. Also something I created.  For reference, check out the old theme...
  8. Personal posts: I only post personal stuff in my Sunday posts now. Where I used to post personal stuff more frequently, I've definitely focused the blog down to more specifically book related stuff now. Sunday Post is the exception, I share a little bit about my week on Sundays.
  9. More aesthetically pleasing: My posts are, in general, more aesthetically pleasing now than they used to be. They were a bit more messy back when I started this blog. I have more tools and more know-how, so the posts come out a bit better than they used to.
  10. Reflects a different place in life: I'm generally in a different place in my life than when I started this blog. Back when I started book blogging, I was a grad student. So, my life was hectic and my blog kind of looks a little hectic to match. Now, I'm in a much more settled place, I'm older, and I'm more able to devote time and resources to my blog.
  11. Bonus: I have a Bookstagram account. So, if you're on Bookstagram (Instagram) I'd love to be friends.
Looks like I was able to come up with ten things. If you made it this far, thanks for sticking with me through my reminiscing. I can't wait to visit around and see what everyone else did with this week's theme.

If you've stopped in, please leave me a comment so I can drop by and visit you, too!

Sunday Post, No. 6

Sunday Post is a weekly blog meme hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer and is a place to share weekly goings on. I'd love to share my week with you!

It's been two weeks since I've written a Sunday Post and I've missed doing it. I finished up my classes for both colleges I teach for this last week, so I have the whole summer off before I'm back to work. I'm excited to have a few months off to work on my own projects.

One such project is editing my book and deciding if it's fit for publication, and what that entails. I'm a big fan of indie authors and self-publishing, I believe it takes the power and puts it in the hands of the author, so if I publish I'll be an indie author. We'll see how it goes!

Otherwise, I've taken my sweet puppy on a few doggy playdates to my best friends house where she has one big dog (very big!) and one small dog. I'm trying to get sweet Kneesaa, my pup, socialized so she doesn't spaz out every time she sees other dogs or humans. It's going okay so far. She's a good girl, but she's a little afraid of dogs. Like mother like fur-daughter, I suppose. I was bit by a German Shepard when I was five years old, so I've always been a little afraid of dogs. Maybe she can sense it? As for how she feels about the play dates, well....

She gives the best side eye!

What I'm reading this week

I've been trying to get to this one for a while. So, I'm reading it this week... so far, so good.

A small-town enemies to lovers romance and the debut novel from the bestselling author of Flawless and Wild Love.

Keeping things professional with my employees has never been an issue… until Billie waltzes onto my property.

On the blog this week

In the mail this week

I didn't get any book mail this week, but I did get my Book of the Month book box last week. I just don't have a picture of it. So, instead I'm going to share my NetGalley haul. Check out what I've got on my NetGalley reading list right now...

I can't wait to get into these books. They all look so fun, I'm having trouble figuring out which one I want to read next. So, I'll probably prioritize them by release date.

That's it this week. I hope y'all have had a great week and that your having a nice weekend!

Synopsis {via Goodreads}

A forbidden age gap stand-alone from small-town romance author Brooke Montgomery about a daring horse trainer and her off-limits ex-boyfriend’s dad…

When we met at the rodeo, I only knew his first name.

Sparks ignited between us, and we spent an unforgettable night together.

It's not until the morning after when I recognize his last name do I realize who he is.

So I do what any rational woman would and make the walk of shame while he sleeps. It's not like I'll ever see him again or have to explain why I left.

But I'm proven wrong when he shows up at my family's ranch as the new farrier.

We can't be more than friends—for many reasons.

He's twice my age, workplace relationships are off-limits, and he moved back to rebuild a relationship with his son—the one I used to date.

Getting involved would ruin everything.

Review:

πŸ’š Age gap
πŸ–€ Ex-boyfriend's dad
πŸ’š Workplace romance
πŸ–€ Cowboy
πŸ’š Small town

Here with Me is a cowboy romance with all the energy. This book has a one night stand, a secret relationship, a hot ex-boyfriend's dad, all the cowboy (and cowgirl) vibes you could possibly want, and it's got a sweet age gap romance to boot. Montgomery pulls out all the stops with this one and it is hot! This book starts spicy and stays that way to the end.

Fisher and Noah are both fun characters in completely different ways. Noah is completely forward, while Fisher is more reserved. She comes on to him first and there's a one night stand that she initiates. While Fisher is an older man with a troubled past, Noah is young and successful with a great big loving family. They're completely different and they completely fall for each other and it is delicious!

The plot of this book is a perfectly paced age-gap, ex-boyfriend's dad plot with a suspense element. There's a bad guy who does bad things (I won't tell!). It's completely clear why the bad guy is doing the things he's doing and you feel for Noah and the horses through the ordeal with the baddie. I suppose there's also a place where you feel for Fisher, too, but since this story has an HEA that angle doesn't have as much of a bite.

Overall, the story is spicy and delicious and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys age gap and cowboy romances!

Oh, and if you happen to listen to this book on Audible, the female narrator, Maxine Mitchell is *chef's kiss* while the male narrator, Tor Thom, is *cringe.* While I'm sure Tor Thom is usually fine, his southern accent is absolutely awful. No reflection on the book or the author, but yeah, do yourself and favor and skip the Audible and read this one.

Review: Wild and Wrangled by Lyla Sage

Author: Lyla Sage
Genre: Small Town Romance
Format: Audible, Kindle
Kindle Unlimited: No
Series: Yes, Standalone
Pages: 368

Synopsis {via Goodreads}

She’s the one that got away. He’s the one that never let her go.

From the bestselling author of Done and Dusted and Swift and Saddled, the next book in the Rebel Blue Ranch series, a small town romance in which past lovers get a second chance to rediscover what they lost.

Camille Ashwood had always loved a plan. Her latest was her best yet. She was going to get married so she could secure her daughter’s future, get her overbearing parents off her back, and finally start building her own life in small town Meadowlark, Wyoming. Easy, right?

But when her groom doesn’t show up to the wedding, Cam’s life is turned upside down—she doesn’t even have a place to live. That is, until she finds out the house she’s loved since high school is available to rent. There’s only one problem: the neighbor.

Dusty Tucker has spent nearly all of his adult life running. Running from what, though? More like who: Cam Ashwood. But ever since he returned home last year, the girl who was his first, well, everything has become a woman seemingly determined to keep him at arm’s length. And he was okay with that—at least, that’s what he kept telling himself. She was getting married, after all. But now she’s single and living next door. Dusty wants to show her that they can be friends, and that he can stay put.

Despite her best attempts to stay far away from Dusty Tucker, Cam realizes that being close to him is like slipping on her favorite jeans. Easy. Comfortable. That is until past wounds start to open and feelings—both old and new—wreak havoc. Nearly ten years after they first met, Dusty and Cam begin to wonder if their first love can also be their last. And this time, will it be forever?

Wow, if you're a fan of small town, second chance, and cowboy romances this book has it all. Wild and Wrangled is Cam and Dusty's story and if you're an avid Rebel Blue fan (like me), you've probably been waiting for this one! Cam and Dusty's story is the quintessential "it was always you" story about a single mom, Cam, and a world traveling cowboy who goes home to settle down, Dusty.

The characters in this book are so swoon worthy. Dusty is absolutely everything. He loves Cam, has always loved Cam, and would do anything for her. He's the guy every girl wants. The one who would fight for you... at least the second time around. He's the guy that you want in your corner when things aren't going great or when you need someone to stand up for you.

Cam is a little less everything and a bit more standoffish, she has worries and, after being left at the alter, is a little bit untrusting. She has good reasons, given that her family is awful and the man she was going to marry (a man she's sort of meh about) seriously didn't show up to their wedding. Any girl would be completely put off under those circumstances. I think Cam might be the most realistic, relatable heroine in the Rebel Blue series because she's completely imperfect in ways that make her very realistic.

The plot is a second chance, single mom, couple tries to get back together plot. It's full of hurdles and is perfectly paced. Cam and Dusty don't just run back into one another's arms. While there are a few places I think Cam is being unreasonable, I also think her reactions are very human and that makes them relatable.

Overall, highly recommend this book, and all of the Rebel Blue novels, to anyone who enjoys second chance, single mom, small town, cowboy romances.

Review: Fall from Grace by Stephanie Napolitano

Author: Stephanie Napolitano
Genre: Small Town Romance
Format: Kindle, ARC
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Series: No, Standalone
Pages: 347

Synopsis {via Goodreads}
Fall from Grace follows former NYC party girl and socialite Grace Harrington, who’s spent the last year as an outcast after a scandal shattered her high-society life. No longer the carefree woman she once was, Grace struggles with her tarnished reputation. Her mother refuses to accept the new Grace, and her so-called friends have turned their backs on her.

Desperate for a fresh start, Grace seeks refuge in the small town of Grand Haven, where she finds herself charmed by the simple life—and even more so by Caleb, the rugged single dad who owns the local bar. As Grace begins to heal and rediscover herself, her past resurfaces, threatening to unravel everything she’s worked to rebuild.

Can Grace overcome the shadows of her old life and finally find her place, or will she keep falling?

A small town, single dad romance with an HEA!

Review:

🩷 Small town
πŸ–€ Single Dad
🩷 Age Gap
πŸ–€ Social class differences
🩷 Redemption

Fall From Grace is a sweet small town romance that starts as a big city tragedy. Grace is a big city party girl who, after a tragedy befalls her, runs away from her life in the big apple to hide in a cozy little town. Grand Haven is exactly what a sweet little town should be, it's full of small town, Hallmark-ish charm and the cast of characters in Grand Haven are a wonderful, diverse group of people. Napolitano does a very nice job making the characters in this book, well... characters.

Caleb is a hot single dad, so his little girl, Noelle, plays a big role in the book. While there's some sad moments with little Noelle, she's a ray of sunshine throughout the book. While he may be hot, Caleb has a few issues, like a fear of being abandoned by city girls because this exact thing has happened to him before. But, he's a sweet, stable, sexy bar owner with a good support system. He's basically the exact opposite of Grace, who is living out of hotels and Bed & Breakfasts.

Grace and Caleb have heat and chemistry almost from their first meeting and it's easy to see how they fall in love as the story progresses. While they don't weather their first big hurdle very well, no one in romance novels ever does. Talking goes out the window and Grace does what she does best, she runs. The whole thing could probably have been worked out with better communication, but overall their struggles aren't insurmountable.

Fall From Grace has a few different things happening, there's a redemption plot, a romance between Caleb and Grace, and a side-plot with little Noelle. So there're a lot of threads and Napolitano does a great job tying them all up in the end. There're no loose threads hanging around, everything is tied up with a pretty pink bow. When the book ended, I still wanted to know more about Grace and Caleb's life together, which I think is the mark of a good story.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys cozy, small town vibes.

Designing wedding dresses is Rose Guidry’s passion, but she’ll never wear one down
the aisle.

Having learned to never trust a man with her heart, Rose keeps her dating casual and her
feelings about love from her clients, including the childhood friend who hired Rose to make her
wedding party dresses. It’s a great gig to kick off Rose’s small business, but since she’s back
home with her mom after failing to make it big in NYC, she desperately needs a place bigger
than her childhood bedroom to work in. Good thing the brother of the bride—Rose’s middle
school crush—has an apartment to rent attached to the church he’s renovating into a home.

Everything’s coming up roses for shirtless social media DIYer Jason Soniat: he has a lucrative
sponsorship offer from a major tool company, and he’s ready to date again after a toxic
relationship nearly wrecked his life. But the guilt he feels over how he treated his family during
that time makes him vow that the next woman he dates will be mom-approved. Rose may be
beautiful inside and out, but her tarot cards, tattoos, and commitment phobia mean she’s
distinctly mom-disapproved.

When a hurricane threatens, Jason convinces Rose to evacuate with him to Florida where their
flirty friendship speeds into a relationship hotter than a day at the beach. But returning home as
a couple has rough edges and uneven seams: Jason seems unwilling to tell his family he’s
dating Rose, reinforcing her belief that all men leave. When the secret slips out and causes
family drama, they’ll both have to break old patterns if they want to craft a blissful happily ever
after.

Packed with humor, double-entendres, and banter, Follow Your Bliss is a spicy, dual-POV
adult contemporary romance. Sex positive and fun, it’s perfect for fans of Rosie Danan’s
The Roommate and Tessa Bailey’s It Happened One Summer.

Review: Off Your Game by Susan Renee

Author: Susan Renee
Genre: Sports Romance
Format: Kindle
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Series: Yes, Standalone
Pages: 355

Synopsis: {via GoodReads}

For fans of Tessa Bailey, a laugh-out-loud enemies-to-lovers romance about a professional hockey player who finds himself facing off with the team’s new marketing rep, who might just be his new lucky charm.

Good looks and wads of cash usually get me whatever I desire, unless I desire a box of my favorite cereal at the grocery store right before it closes. As if tonight’s loss wasn’t bad enough, I'm now watching said box of cereal, my literal good luck charm, disappear in some woman’s cart.

The brazen woman denies my cash offer along with my proposal for a more intimate payment. How much loss can a man take in one day?

At this point, who cares how rude I am to her? She’s public enemy number one and chances of seeing her again are slim to none. That is, until she appears at the arena the next morning as the newest marketing rep for the Chicago Red Tails hockey team.

Just my luck.

Carissa Smallson is feisty, outspoken, and boldly confident. She's also funny, down to earth, and…ugh, she’s insanely pretty. Everything about her is both unbelievably annoying and terrifyingly attractive.

As Captain of the team, I’m always laser focused on my job, but lately I can’t stop thinking about her. I lead my team to victory night after night. Hustle, hit, and never quit.

But if I’m not careful, she could knock me off my game.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy sports romances in general, and hockey romances are always fun, so this book is right up my alley. I started out a little dubious about whether this is a romance novel because the cover doesn't say romance to me, but it is most certainly a romance novel.

The story has great romantic tension, there's a villain we don't really meet until the last chapters of the book, and the characters have heat. They're attracted to one another almost from the start of the book, even though they start out enemies over a box of cereal!

I have to say, at the beginning of this book, I was doubtful that I would like Colby. He starts out kind of mean, but when he comes around what you see about him is that he's protecting himself. He's vulnerable and doesn't necessarily want to want Carissa.

Carissa is strong and likeable from the start. I liked her and her best friend from the beginning pages to the end. There are some great scenes with her, particularly at the end when she's covered in water.

The pace of the story is a little bit strange because even though there's a villain, and she's mentioned a few times, we don't see her until almost the end of the story. To me, that feels a little bit rushed. But, the story plays itself out completely with no loose ends.

The book also doesn't have an epilogue, which I suppose isn't required but is something I always look forward to. I want to see what happened to the characters a few months (or years) later. I want to know things worked out for them and they're living their happily ever after. This book is missing that element.

Overall, I really enjoyed Off Your Game and would definitely recommend it to other hockey romance readers. It was fun, light in most places, and the characters had great chemistry.

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Soul Searching by Lyla Sage

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Wishful Endings and spotlights books we're excited for but haven't read yet.

This week's Can't-Wait book is Soul Searching by Lyla Sage. I am a huge Lyla Sage fan and she has a new duology coming out in September, and I am dying to read it!

Synopsis
Release date
: September 30, 2025

Home is where the heart is—and this one is haunted.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Rebel Blue Ranch series returns with a brand-new story, featuring a small-town upholsterer in need of a fresh start, a photographer whose life has come to a screeching halt . . . and the supernatural forces that bring them together.

Collins Cartwright does not want to go home. Sweetwater Peak, Wyoming, was supposed to be in her rearview mirror, but when she finds out a developer is trying to buy her parents’ antique shop out from under them, she doesn’t have a choice—at least, that’s what she tells her family. They don’t need to know she’s lost her job and is out of money. Or that the ghosts that have always been her companions have recently gone silent.

But just because she’s returned home doesn’t mean she has to stay with her parents or crash on her twin sister’s couch. Lucky for her, the new-to-town upholsterer has a room for rent above his store. Unluckily, it is absolutely crawling with more ghosts who are freezing her out. And Collins hates being ignored.

Brady Cooper is absolutely and totally fine. Seriously, there’s no secret reason why he decided to uproot his life and suddenly move to Sweetwater Peak. He just needed a change of pace. At least, that’s what he tells himself. And everyone else.

When he agrees to let the elusive Collins Cartwright stay in his spare room, he doesn’t know that she’s absolutely bonkers—constantly talking to herself and having conversations with no one—or that she looked like that. But as they begin to get closer, the lines between them start to blur, leaving both of them—and the ghosts that have been pushing them together—wondering whether or not their temporary arrangement could be something more permanent.

So far, everything Sage has written has been sweet cowboy romance, so that this book has a supernatural element is interesting and new. September is a long way off so I'm hoping a chance for an ARC will appear somewhere along the way, maybe on NetGalley.

What's your Can't-wait book this week?
